I have a 1997 Corolla 160 Gli with 422 000km on the clock.
It has served me very well.

I have a new noise coming from the engine compartment.
When I switch on, I can hear a hard knocking sound rrrrrrrrrr
When I depress the clutch, this sound disappears, and the engine sounds very sweet.
When I release the clutch in neutral, the sound comes back.
When I put the car in gear and drive off, I can hear the sound while the car is in gear, no sound when the clutch is depressed while the car is moving.

I have had several opinions as to what the problem could be, ranging from gearbox to timing belt.
Has anybody else had a similar experience?
There is no discernible difference in the feel of the gear shift.

I would like to ascertain what the problem is, with the solution.
And I would like to find a good and reasonably priced repairer.
I am a pensioner, and obviously would like to keep the cost of repair under control.
Many thanks for any assistance.
I live in Sunninghill, near Midrand, Gauteng.
Want to repair a great running 30+mpg slightly hail dented '94 Corolla with hood/fender/grill. Checked out a few online sites that either offered free shipping or lower prices plus reasonable shipping charges. The total charges were similar from the online sites I checked out (140/45/20). The total charges for NEW CAPA-certified hood/fender/grill were good enough to avoid checking out the local junk yards. Opinions please....

I am a proud new owner of a 2012 corolla S Magnetic gray with Entune. I so am in love with this car. I had to get rid of my 2010 Prius due to health issues but am looking forward to many years of service out of this Corolla. Although I am new to Corolla I am far from new to Toyota. That is all I have owned in 15 years. I figure why stray from the best cars out there. Anyway once again hello from a very happy new Corolla owner!!

I saw my exhaust has broken off in front of the muffler, where there is a clamp. I have a Made in Canada 2005 Corolla LE, 5spd. It looks fairly benign. My mechanic has told me the entire exhaust system is "one-piece" and needs to be replaced from the catalytic converter, to the end, even though he admits most of the parts are fine. He made a special point of saying it was special, a Made in Canada Corolla (which arouses my suspicions immediately). It's a bad spot for sure, right in front of the clamp, but an entire $800.00 exhaust system, not including Labor? Does this pass the sniff test?

Hi all,

I recently tried out a new bike rack for the first time and for the first half of the trip there were no issues at all, but after returning home I noticed the metal fender of the bike had been scratching away at the paint on the trunk during the second half of the trip. It got scratched pretty good, looks like the primer is showing through in some spots.

I don't have much experience with automotive paint so my question is, can this be repaired with a touch up paint kit? Or does it need a full respray? I'm really hoping this doesn't turn out to be too expensive.

hi Folks:

hi Folks:
My car is a 1996 corolla with 1.6L engine and auto transmission. I got a fluctuating idle after I worked on my starter. I disconnected EGR hoses and tubes when I was working on my starter. But now, I cannot fully remember how to restore the connection.

The fluctuating idle only happens at P (parking) channel. When it goes to D or R channel, the engine sounds fine. What I mean by "flucuating" is that the volume of the sound seems periodically changing, like a waving pattern.

I am not sure if the EGR connection is the culprit of my problem, but I guess that is the only cause I can think of. So I am attaching a figure and I hope someone could give me some pointers if I did anything wrong. If you could give me a more illustrative figure on how to hook things up, that will be great!

The tube circled in red in the figure. Should it be connected to something, or should it be left open as it is?
Here is the figure:

Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
