i agree with scott....put a clutch in it, do a front brake job w/ new rotors, and then see if its the altenator or ps pump whining....or trans gears. trans gear oil at level ? As for the ticking...try lucas synthetic oil stablizer...worked on a badly ticking 4.6L

intermitant open in the battery possible...something cracked inside. borrow someones battery or just buy a new one and see what happens or wiggle battery cables at different spots and see if you can duplicate it
