1991 Corolla Transmission Problems

#1
hey guys I've recently aaquired a 1991 rolla that had a bad automatic transmission. I replaced it with one from a toyota scrapyard. everything seems to be in place and the car starts fine. shifting from first to second is fine but tthe problem is 2nd to 3rd. It shifts way later then it should and when it finally does, its a very rough shift. we put all new fluids in both the tranny and dif and I cant seem to find why it has this problem.

The "multi-purpose" fluid is a joke. Automatic transmissions are incredibly picky on the fluid they have in them. You need to look at the manual and fill it with the fluid that is designed to be in it.

okay perfect thank you, I bought the oreillys brand multi purpose fluid but am going to use chevron dex 3. will that be fine?
With petroleum automatic transmission fluids, as long as it meets the minimum specifications for the Dexron III rating, in my opinion/experience, you wont notice any difference from brand to brand. With synthetic automatic transmission fluids, that's an entire different story, but that wont fix the problem your transmission is having.

Double check to be sure the fluid level is correct, because if it's too low it wont shift properly.

okay so i got the fluids all changed and the new filter in and its doing the same exact thing. but its only from 2nd to 3rd. would it be a sensor or cable adjustment issue?

It's possible the junkyard transmission had this issue before-hand. One those years, everything is done with fluid pressure with minimal electronics, so you might need to have a transmission shop look at it. They might need to adjust the bands.

As I advised, you wouldn't see a difference.

See if you can find out how the shifting of this transmission is regulated, either by vacuum or computer, etc. I would guess something isn't working right in that area.

I want to say a band is too tight ... but that doesn't explain the high rpms before shifting (delayed).

Possible that a solenoid is sticking, now that I think about it. Pressure builds and builds while the engine revs up then <pop> it shifts hard when it breaks free.

I'd take it to a pro if you have never done it before. It's inside the transmission, so it will need to be disassembled, assuming that is the problem. Could always have them diagnose and if it sounds like something you can handle, go for it.

Rebuilding is always better than junkyard unless the casing itself is damaged or rusted.

im going to see if i can get a local shop to diagnose it for free. i would have had it rebuilt but when i got the car it came with the junkyard tranny so i just used that.

Hey guys sorry for not keeping you updated on this thread but i havent been able to put time aside for the car until this month. So basically what has happened was i took it to a shop, they drove it and then told me it seemed like something mechanical so it would have to be taken apart and would cost quite a bit so i ended up buying another used transmission from a wrecking yard and am now in the process of the swap.
