There is a mechanical cable attached to the back side of it. I just had this happen to both that one and the vent selector. The cables are probably snapped or just about snapped and it is the pits to replace it. You have to remove the entire dash to get the other end out of the heater. Hopefully it just fell off the back. But thats exactly what happen to mine.
