is the Scion iA the 'new Corolla?'

I know the Corolla is still going strong on Toyota dealerships, but since its inception, it has grown a lot in size, price, features, etc.

I saw a new "Scion" (really, it's mechanically a Mazda 2 with two extra doors) iA in the court parking lot today, and a quick internet search sure makes it look comparable to the '87-'92 Corolla my neighbor had when I was a kid. And with an MSRP of around $16k, the pricing is much more entry-level friendly than the modern Corolla (which quickly climbs to $20k unless you want hand-crank windows and no cruise control - I own a CE, and I the lack of features are the one thing I really fault with this car...)

Love my 14 Corolla but would like to take that new Scion for a spin. If I were buying new today the Im would be strong contender for me also.

Right on. I'm not saying it's going to be the next great thing, but it's piqued my interest. Teenage me would be screaming at myself right now... The iA is a prototypical teenage girl car. As much as I love performance cars, I can't justify owning anything without 4 doors, an automatic (stop-and-go traffic... ugh), and that gets 30+ mpg. I'd prefer 40+.

I have motorcycles to go fast - and guess how often I actually ride them...

rk97 , I would consider it but my 14 Corolla is only 2 years old and 21k miles so a new car is not in the plans for some time . I too have a motorcycle . Not a speed demon sport bike but it moves and rides to my liking and has a track record of reliability , a 2013 Yamaha Road Star 1700 . I don`t see the new Scion models as "girl cars " though . I like small cars . The VW rabbit/Golf and Beetle got a rap as being a "girl car" and I think that hurts sales. Some macho guy might not own one for just that reason. I like the Golf and Beetle, but I`m more concerned with cost of maintenance and reliability, enough so that those were ruled out when I bought the Corolla .

My bike is "sporty," but i wouldn't call it a sportbike. It's an old heavy design. 2000 GSX-F 750 (oil-cooled inline 4). Basically when Suzuki introduced liquid-cooled 600's and 750's (in the 80's?) they continued to produce the old bike with new bodywork. It will still do the quarter mile in under 13 seconds, which feels pretty fast when you spend as much time behind the wheel of a corolla as I do :)

I also have a Honda XR 100 with 16" front wheel and street tires. I race it on kart tracks. The smiles per dollar are a great value.

But 470 miles/week commuting in a business suit means I'll always need a fuel efficient car. We'll see if it's the iA next time around. I could just as easily buy another used Corolla.

I was in the dealership yesterday picking up my '14 Corolla S and noticed the '16 Scion iA. Came real close to bringing it home with me.
