A/C compressor making grinding noise

#1
A/C started making grinding noise a few months ago. Was told by local mechanic it was clutch not disengaging. Noise is occurring entire time car is running. Sounds like metal grinding. Any thoughts or ideas. Also, if there is a way to disconnect, would it have any effect on heat? It is almost winter and don't need A/C but I need to get fixed soon to avoid further issues. Have a Toyota appointment on Wednesday. $65 for diagnostics. Meineke is free initial inspection but no machines to hook it up to--have to test separate parts??!!

Its just a worn bearing in the actual a/c unit only way to get rid of noise is by replacing it or by passing belt
I was told by a local repair shop after they put car on diagnostic machine that it was A/C issue. It has continued making grinding noise but A/C works and noise continues when A/C is off. It is actually unfortunately my water pump. :(

Hi, You really should get it fixed. Disconnecting compressor won't help. All things alternator, water pump, A/C compressor are all driven by 1 belt. if you loose compressor because of a bearing failure. You will loose the belt & everything that is spun by belt will stop. Engine could overheat because water pump is no longer being turned & no power steering if yours has that type of steering gear. Newer Corollas have a electric steering gear that would not be affected by a broken belt. It is well worth the expense to correct before it fails all together
