2010 5 Speed Shifter Stiff?

Hi, I just bought a 2010 Corolla CE with a 5 Speed Manual and 144,000K, does anyone know if the shifters naturally a bit stiff compared to other cars or is there something I can do to loosen it up. It doesn't feel like I am hurting anything when shifting it just makes it a little more annoying to drive in traffic. Thanks.

Have you checked your fluid level? When was the last time you did a drain and fill?
