Drove through a deep puddle .... "VSC Off" is flashing, check engine light is on

Too late to delete (unless I missed something) so I'm back to add this addendum: I typed the above message sitting in a coffee shop, and when I went back to my car and started the engine, the lights were off! Everything seems to be back to normal. Quite a coincidence, after having the lights on...

Drove through a deep puddle .... "VSC Off" is flashing, check engine light is on

Hello, I've done some googling on this and I see it's not uncommon. Since I got this car used without a manual it took me until now to understand what "VSC" is - I thought it had something to do with the ABS sensors on each wheel but I guess not - that would have made sense. To be clear, the car...

    Dumb oil change Q

Just to tie a bow on this thread - my longtime mechanic helped me out and checked out my amateur work. Everything is fine, it was just my paranoia. He tightened the oil filter canister a little and it's all good. I'll chalk this up to my inexperience with these canister-type oil filters, but...

    Dumb oil change Q

Yes I am definitely thinking ramps! As to tightening, like I said I kept turning but it didn't seem to get any harder to turn and the canister was not seating further into the engine block – at least, it looked like that to me. FWIW I've been driving the car the last five days and so far no...

    Dumb oil change Q

I've been doing my own oil changes my whole life. I got a 2010 Corolla with the 1.8L last year. This is my first car with a canister-type oil filter, as opposed to a spin-on. The oil change today was a bitch - the wrench cap got stuck on the canister for one. I don't have ramps for the car, just...

    1.8L oil filter type?

Just curious (but not enough to start a new thread, lol), how important is that crush washer on the oil pan drain plug? I've read that you should put a fresh one on every oil change. I've never done that – and my cars have lived to tell the tale.

    1.8L oil filter type?

I'm not sure why, but don't all new filter cartridges come with an o-ring? Mine did. Why would you toss it and reuse the old one? That makes no sense. It's not that hard to switch them. You're gonna get your hands dirty pulling the old cartridge out of the canister anyway. BTW I can report on...

    1.8L oil filter type?

That is a fantastic video, thanks! One thing that stuck out was how much he tightened the canister. WIth spin-ons, I always thought you tightened between 3/4 turn and a full turn once the gasket makes contact. Most of the time I didn't even use my wrench to tighten it - my bare hands could make...

    1.8L oil filter type?

Thanks a lot for the reply! None of the websites I saw mentioned needing a conversion kit - they all just listed both types of filters. And thanks to your post I now realize that my regular oil filter wrenches won't work - I need a special one that fits the canister. Here I am nearing social...

    1.8L oil filter type?

I recently bought a 2010 Corolla. I've never owned a Corolla hence the possible ignorance expressed in this question! I want to start with a clean slate so I figure an oil change might be good to do. When I searched for a filter I saw both spin-on and cartridge types come up - both claiming to...

Saying hello and my 1st questions (TPMS sensors)

Thanks but I'm still confused – I've done more research and have read about "pre-programmed" sensors, even "multi-protocol" sensors. From one website I visited: "These aftermarket sensors are pre-programmed for an entire range of vehicles and come ready-to-use out of the box. As with OE sensors...

Saying hello and my 1st questions (TPMS sensors)

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be getting new wheels when switching to snows so thought that might be an appropriate time to get the sensors installed. (Or maybe I should get wheels ? I wonder how the installation costs break down over a few seasons. Now you have me thinking!). As I mentioned...

Saying hello and my 1st questions (TPMS sensors)

Hi, I'm new here, we just bought a 2010 Corolla (pretty sure it's the lowest trim level). It replaced my 2001 Lexus - so I'm getting used to not having a lot of things I used to have in a car! :) The main reason we bought it was that it's a genuine "little old lady" car with 25K miles (my Lexus...
