cold air intake

Ive recently installed a Spectra cold air intake and when i removed the air filter box the car wouldnt start. It sputter then die. Put air filter box back in and have cold air intake attached to it the car would start. What would i need to do to delete the air fillter box?

Im slowly investing money into my car and making it nicer. Now i want it faster...what would be the best cold air intake, exhaust, and tuner? I have a 2010 Corolla LE...Thanks for everyones input!!!
