How to remove rear bumper support bracket?

#1
I am replacing a damaged rear bumper (daughter's 2010 Corolla S) and I see that the driver's side rear bumper support bracket is broken so I have to replace that. It is the one nearest the fender well and is attached by nylon fastener in the fender well and two metal bolts in the trunk area. The bracket also pierces the body in three places into the trunk (two are for the bolts and the third is just because). I can get the fasteners out, but the three extensions that pierce the body into the trunk are pretty firmly in place. I don't want to do something stupid that will complicate putting in a new bracket. How do I get the broken one off at the three extensions? Is this just a brute force question (pound them out from inside the trunk)or is there anything more correct/elegant than that?
