Need Help Replacing Catalytic Converter

Hi, I am trying to help a friend replace the catalytic converter in her 2003 Toyota Corolla. She has purchased a new cat, but when I got under the car it looked like the OEM cat had been welded to the exhaust. My friend said that she purchased the car new from the dealership and had never done any exhaust work. Am I missing something here? Perhaps it only appears to be welded but really isn't?

Thanks,
Tom in Austin

Every catalyctic convertor I've ever seen in 25+ years in the automotive industry has always been welded on right from the factory.

Why are you replacing the convertor? If memory serves correctly, they have a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Also, again, if memory serves correctly, it is illegal to replace a catalyctic convertor yourself, but instead you have to have a licensed auto repair center perform the work.
