Toyota has run the figures and sees reason for great confidence in 2013. A projected 2 percent automobile sales increase will result in a record year and put the Japanese automaker soundly back on top of the global market.

Toyota eyes huge global sales in 2013

In 2007, Toyota sold 9.37 million units, which was its high before the economic crisis started. In 2013, Toyota is anticipated to sell 9.7 million, a 22 percent increase from 2012 and the greatest gain since 2000. The projection expects that Toyota and its subsidiaries Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co. will most likely sell about 9.91 million in 2013 altogether.

Analyst Yoshiaki Kawano at HIS Automotive in Tokyo explained that a 15 percent sales lag is anticipated in Japan for 2012 with the government subsidies of fuel-efficient vehicles in place now. Still, that will all be made up with the potential 2013 sales Toyota is hoping for.

A Prius to conquer them all?

There is a lot of room for the automaker, according to LMC, especially in the United States and Asia in 2013. Joichi Tachikawa, Toyota spokesman, said that the company is hoping to take the top sales spot from General Motors and Volkswagen with the 2013 gas-electric hybrid Prius. The one vehicle is expected to sell quite a bit.

"Asia's sales will be driven by Indonesia, while for the U.S., models such as Avalon and Lexus LS will likely help boost sales,” he said.

To be able to accommodate the Indonesian rush, Toyota will reportedly build an engine factory there that will than double capacity. This is part of a $1.3 billion investment in Southeast Asia that Toyota will make over the next five years.
