How Fuel Injectors Work

#1
I took apart the fuel injection system on my Corolla to see what's inside and how it works. I made a short video explaining what's inside a port injected fuel injector:

Here's a brief explanation:

The fuel injectors are located on the fuel rail on the intake side of the engine:

This is the fuel rail removed:

One of the benefits of port injection is the valves are cleaned by the gasoline as the engine runs, you can clearly see where the carbon deposit ends:

I hooked it up to a washer tank to see what the spray is like:

Inside is a coil that controls a small pintle valve. The valve opens and closes the sprayer, and that's what controls the flow of fuel:

Here's a cross-section of what's going on inside:

Other engines have direct injection, where the injector is situated inside the combustion chamber. This is better for fuel economy and power, but it doesn't keep the valves clean and can cause carbon buildup:

Enjoy!
