Am I being stupid buying a 1997 Corolla?

Totally buy this car. The engine in it (the 4A series) is bullet proof, parts are incredibly available, and will likely continue to be so. For maintenance... I dropped about $1.2k in mine when I got it to do all belts and hoses, head, head gasket, radiator, timing belt, fluids, other gaskets...

Help! 94 Corolla DX Brake Line Issues

Yeah, definitly not a DIY fix... In a pinch, you can use a brass compression fitting, but it is NOT a good idea. (though it will get you home if stranded). You should probably replace the whole line, because if it rotted through in that one spot, there are probably other problem areas as well.

    Aftermarket Cruise Control

Go to home depot, buy a length of 1" pvc pipe. Cut to length so it fits between seat and gas pedal. VIOLA!!! Just kidding, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone... I had an old gutless diesel truck who's top speed was 60mph, and this worked great for that.

    High Beams Issue

My pathfinder does the same thing... Driving without lights is not fun huh? My guess is it's a problem with the light switch on the steering column. If you wiggle the switch around will the lights come on? In my pathfinder, I've found that if I press the switch into the steering column when...

1996 Corolla NO CRANK NO START

Yeah, should be easy to remove. Just posted this a few minutes ago. Look at where the wires from the box splice into the wires under the dash. There is usually one wire that is cut and the box is wired between the two ends. This is the magic wire. Just cut out the box, and splice this wire...

    Click in Engine

Record the sound and post it up here, I bet it's actually the classic exhaust manifold crack that our cars are susceptible to. Although if your mechanic is any good at all he would have been able to tell the difference. As for valve issues. You can adjust the cam lobe to lifter clearance but...

    Noise from Engine / Gearbox?

Yeah definitely a clutch related problem, and I think it's throwout bearing too. Get the new parts, and replace the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and while you're in there, inspect the slave cylinder for corrosion/pitting in the bore. (if you're planning on getting...

1994 Corolla - Intermittent Starting Problem

I would probably check the ignition system... Take one spark plug out, and keep it in the wire. Then disconnect all other spark plug wires. Hold the tip of the spark plug against the valve cover (to ground it), and have a friend crank the engine. You should get a nice healthy blue spark. If...

Headers? Stay with OE Exhaust Manifold?

Totally depends on the design of the header. Backpressure is kind of a mis-nomer... People think that because smaller exhaust systems create more low end torque it is because the smaller system creates more pressure in the exhaust system, this is totally completely NOT TRUE. What it does, is...

1996 Corolla - Problems With Immobiliser

I don't know specifics on this cars system, but cheaper immobilizers just sit between the ignition switch and the starter, I've seen them both under the dash, and crappy installs under the hood. You should be able to find where the wire from the ignition goes into it, and then comes out and...

    Dragging Brakes

Yeah, definitely should have greased the caliper slides. Never heard of caliper grease though, we used to just use a quality high temp grease. Don't think this could possibly be your brake master cylinder...

Anyone have a 4afe Crankshaft Timing Pulley (1996)

Hi Guys, I was replacing the oilpump seal on my Geo and couldn't get the crankshaft timing pulley off... If you look in the toyota FSM, it mysteriously doesn't tell you how... Tried everything with no luck. Someone recommended welding studs to it and pulling it that way, tried it, still no...
