1.8L Knock Help!

#1
I bought a 96 Corolla 1.8L for cheap and trying to fix this car. There is a loud ticking noise coming from the head on the left side. I put my ear on the oil cap and it sounds like it is right there. When I start the car, I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal to keep it running. My question to you corolla experts, is it worth it to try to fix it. I am not sure what is going on but it sounds the problem is in the head......Any suggestions?

Use a long screwdriver to pinpoint the noise. Put the tip of the screwdriver to where you suspect the noise is coming from and then put the handle end to your ear. You'll be able to hear inside the engine.
It could be a bad engine with serious internal engine wear and damage, which may be the explanation as to why you were able to buy the car for a cheap price.
