2013 Corolla L - Is it The Stereo That is Terrible, The Antenna, or is it Everything?

#1
Hey Corolla folks - First time poster here! I chose this site because it had a lot of activity compared to other Corolla sites. Got a few questions on a 2013 I just purchased, and I'm hoping you can help.

I did a quick search here but saw little about 2013 Corolla stereos, in here and the modification forum, so here goes.

Wife and I had a totally stock Mineral Green 2003 Corolla LE 5spd with just about 200K on it. Zero issues with that car and it had great overall quality. All was fine until a drunk Expedition driver rammed it in our driveway last month. Guy took off and we never caught'em. Grrr.... Crunched the core support, cracked the glass and caused over $6600 in damage. It was totaled.

But on the bright side, the decision to go buy another Corolla was an easy one. So a 2013 L is what we ended up with. The problem is, the stereo is absolutely terrible. It fades out under bridges, the display can only handle one function at a time and the overall sound quality is flat and lifeless, regardless of how many settings you can tweak. Far cry from the 02 stock stereo.

So, knowing there aren't a lot of modified 2013s out there, can anyone give guidance in letting me know if they think Id be best suited with a new antenna, head unit, speakers, or all of the above?

There is no roof mounted antenna - so I presume the antenna is in the glass. If you ask me, it acts like some crappy satellite radio antenna, yet we are only listening to local stations. (and dont have any satellite radio subscriptions). Not sure how to cure this problem, but was hoping a new head unit could help. The one thing a radio needs to do is receive, and this one is terrible at it.

Obviously my display issues can be cured with a new deck, but will it enhance the sound do you think, still using factory speakers?

Just curious the thoughts of those out there that may have done this to their Corollas. Good, bad? Any recommendation on a head unit/antenna?

Thank in advance.

Heard the antenna was in the glass--or at least, no longer located on the roof, as it is on my '09 model.

If you lose signal under bridges and so on, it's most likely an antenna issue. Check around in other forums for information on the problem.

As far as the speakers' sound quality, I like mine very much.

Am unsure if your dealer could give a care about whether or not you pick up stations while driving under bridges, but can advise you NOT to let them charge you for a once-over glance or systems check--the sort of check which may require you to drive around with a tech in the jump seat for a real-world test.

I was hoping to find someone who had replaced there antenna (2013 corolla),,,,,,,,,,,,
so see how and what they had to do .
The antenna is in the windshield. I own a 13 Corolla and have no issues with mine. If It happens only while driving in underpasses, your problem might be more of an issue of bad reception than an electrical problem. That being said, I don’t rule out some kind of short. But heads up: that rear windshield with integrated antenna and defogger is in the $900+ neighborhood.

The stereo that came with my base model 2013 is beyond awful. And, I happen to be a talk-radio junkie - so the AM radio is useless. I live near a major city, so it's not signal strength - my wife's Camry proves that. In order to listen to the AM radio I must have the rear defroster on at the same time, otherwise the static buzz will drown out the signals. Sometimes the blower fan from the A/C will also create pulsating static that will vary according to how fast the blower is going.

My solution has been to run my favorite AM talk, news, informational shows and stations through my cell phone and play that - through the aux input. ( side benefit - I can listen to shows from other cities, and shows that I missed ( archived............... )

With the level of interference you’re experiencing, you have a short. Plenty of probabilities: frayed cables, damaged antenna, etc. If you decide to get it fixed find a mechanic with plenty of experience with electrical repairs.

located on your rear window the top portion is your antenna. you may check to see if some one damaged the connection over there, on the lower part will be the defrosters. you should also see on the center outside top a satalite antenna for Xm or so..

I do own a 2010 and had owned a 2013 and the signal was weak when going in to a garage that was open not really going to obstruct a signal loss.

What you can try is purchasing a antenna booster or other type of antenna . before you start tearing out the original system. a few dollars spend is not going to bankrupt you.

I deal with the 2010 radio I listen to a station that simply loses signal 25 miles from a Major radio station that should broadcast 75 mi. away Lol today they cut back on signal at given times so I switch to Pandora. until I am out of a cell range Lol

The sound quality of the CD player especially in our 2015 Corolla L is horrendous. Our 2013 sounds great. Must have been a very bad design for the 2015 L. I am a sound duplicating audio recording specialist so the difference is vast. No tweaking will ever improve the quality. My advice would be to change the unit out with a JVC, Alpine, Pioneer, etc. Anything but the stock piece of junk. Ive had transistor radios that sounded better. Very sad. Expected more from Toyota.
