Changing size of tires from 16" to 17"

#1
Hi guys. I got a corolla 2014 LE with 205 55 r16 original tire size. Since I'm big and heavy each time i sit in the car, it goes down and i have been hitting many bumbs and other things on the road while driving. I'm thinking in change the tires and rims to 17" but I'm worry about it. Is it ok? Also I'm sure I'll need wheel spacers...are they safe? Thanks in advance

When changing wheels and tires you want to keep the outside diameter(OD) the same as OEM - or as close to it as possible.
When you put on a bigger wheel - 17" in your case you will need to have a tire that has less sidewall than your current tires to stay close to OEM OD.
Less sidewall means you feel the road more, there is less rubber and air between the wheel and the road - so the bumps you are talking about will feel more bumpy.
Check out a website like tirerack.com or discounttire.com - they will provide options - but based on your description I don't think you want to go 17:

215 45 r17 is the OEM tire size for the rims that come with the 2014 corolla S....practically the same car as yours just a different trim so if you don't want to have to deal with weight issues just stick with those dimensions.

the OEM rims of 2014 corolla s are 17's but even if you choose to not go with those exact specs.... any 17 inch rim will work.

17 in tires won't solve your problem. It dosen't raise the call that much higher just shorter sidewalls. Rougher ride. As much as I hate to sound like a smart ass.

1. See if you can find heavy duty suspension.

2. Buy a larger car with higher ground clearance and load capacity.

3. Go on a diet.

You need to find a car that fits you !!

If he goes to a 17" wheel don't use the the OEM 215/45R17 since its diameter is smaller than other OEM sizes. The best size is a 225/45R17 with a diameter of 25.0". Here is a list of various tire sizes for the Corolla and the respective diameter.

195/65R15 25.0" diameter
205/55R16 24.9"
215/45R17 24.6"
225/45R17 25.0"

Other options.
225/50R16 25.0"
205/50R17 25.1"
235/45R17 25.3" if you want a little more sidewall. This might be a great choice for you if you want to go to a 17" wheel/tire package.
215/55R16 25.3" if you want more sidewall and stay with a 16" wheel/tire package.
