05 corolla, brakes lately have been feeling spongy, but it’s not consistent. for instance, it happened one day a week and a half ago, but then was fine. now today it happened again. is this likely the master cylinder? and is there any way to determine if it for sure is the master cylinder vs something else?

It was common in the 7th gen Corollas , To find out it was the Brake Power Booster that went bad . I would just check for leaks by spraying soapy water around it and on it , But if nothing shows just ride it out till it goes and by that time you will know if it is a wheel seal leaking , a caliper going bad or sticking , brake master cylinder - Just to much to point at when all the symptoms are similar . On your next brake service if you do one on your own bleed the brakes maybe the fluid is contaminated .
