What Are the Rubber Parts on My Front Struts?

#1
2006 Corolla LE. 60,000 miles.

On the front struts both of the rubber bellows on the struts (inside the spring) are all ripped up. The shiny shaft of the shock absorber part of the strut is showing.

How important are these rubber parts? Replacing them seem like it would require removing the entire strut and disassembling it.

How long do front struts last? After 60,000 miles are they on their last legs? Or are they good for 100,000 more miles?

After all the work involved in removing the struts am I better off just replacing the entire strut?
