2013 Cranks Well But No Start- 2009-2013 Forum

I posted this in the general board as well:

2013 Corolla cranks fine, wouldn't start
2013 Corolla S parked since Friday evening, we come out Sunday afternoon and the car won't start. Turned key in ignition and it cranked perfectly . The usual suspects are spark and fuel.
These days we have to add in 'computer'.
We did multiple tries and the starting motor was whizzing away yet the engine would not run (didn't hear any combustion, either).

We did some internet research and one hit suggested disconnecting the battery overnight so that the computer would 'reset'.

We disconnected ( neg. terminal) , came back in 2 hours, re-hooked up the (negative) cable and had a first start that was difficult. Pressed the gas pedal multiple times, it finally caught.

After that(now a day later), all starts have been smooth, easy and normal (no need to step on gas and it started right up!).
Now it's Tuesday and the car starts perfectly.

Anyone else have a similar experience? Any ideas on the subject would be appreciated.

Thanks !

Pressing on the gas doesn't do anything on a fuel injected car. It kinda sounds like something hiccuped with the fuel pump and resetting the computer fixed it, but that is just a guess. You don't have anything aftermarket tapping into the wiring harness do you?

response to 'fuel pump hiccupped'

No, The car is vanilla . We're due for an oil change (' maintenance req'd ' is lit on the dash) and I'll ask the service folks if they have experience with this.

00535- how to reset

As I mentioned, one article that we saw suggested that the computer could be reset by disconnecting the battery .
"We did some internet research and one hit suggested disconnecting the battery overnight so that the computer would 'reset'."

I only disconnected the negative cable and only for 2 hours( though can't imagine why time has anything to do with it - unless there is a capacitor that maintains charge to the computer for a while) .

The key would disable the fuel pump if the codes didn't match, at least on the Ford PATS system anyway, not sure how Toyota handles it.

When the computer loses power, it re-learns all of the trim settings again because those settings need power to stay saved, since it changes with driver habits.

Donated: key and re-learning

Donabed,

I think we can rule out the key, since it worked after a while.
I was wondering if disconnecting the negative terminal was enough to cause a reset. Do you have any knowledge about that aspect?

A little researching on battery removal to reset ECU:
One article instructs to remove the positive cable as well.
Re-install after 15 minutes in opposite order of removal, i.e. Hook up positive then negative.
A warning was mentioned about having reset codes for alarm systems and/or anti-theft radio systems .

Not again !!!

I purchased (from my local Toyota dealership) a 2013 "S" model in December. It was used(11,700 miles / in six months) The reason that I made the move to buy was that my 2005 Saturn Ion(with 78K miles) was beginning to experience Passlock problems. The keys/computer disabling the ignition horrible feature I am shocked to see that such a new vehicle as yours(same as mine) might be experiencing this problem. I better get mine in for servicing(free I believe/Certified Toyota purchase ? ) to keep the warranty

Hi Doug B and welcome to the Corolla Forum!:clap::):thumbup1::party::balloon:

You will find a plethora of threads and videos here that will help you with your Corolla. There are a really great bunch of folks here who are also more than willing to provide help when needed. Glad to have you aboard! :thumbup1:

Sorry to hear about the problem you had with your GM, Saturn vehicle. GM is in the news about ignitions being disabled in some of their vehicles as their customers are driving down the road and some of them have been killed when they get into a crash because of this. The vehicle loses power steering, power brakes, can't accelerate as the engine is shut off and to make matters even worse, the air bags are disabled with the ignition off. GM has a lot to answer for.

With any vehicle, per federal law it can be serviced/repaired by any auto center anywhere, or by the owner of the vehicle and the factory warranty is not negatively affected. See the below video -

Hi Doug. Just search the forum here and you will find a ton of information at your disposal. :thumbup1:

I just made a new post about the warranty issue you brought up and posted several videos about along with a link to the Federal Trade Commission and the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act federal law regarding this.

Re:No start 'fixed' after unhook/rebook battery

Finally took it in for service(oil change). I mentioned the 'no start' to the dealer service agent. They did a battery check. No codes were pulled ( did they try?).

My last gasp will be to talk to the service mgr, ask him for TSB research.

Apologies for responding to a 6 year old post, but my friend sent me this link, after describing exactly what OP mentioned. Exact same thing happened with my 2013 Corolla S, yesterday, and am very grateful for the info. I disconnected the battery overnight and the car started, sluggish at first, after pressing the gas several times. Thank you
