UPDATE:
CONFIRMED. Timing belt 100% causing the clanking metallic noise.
Also, there was a metallic squeal coming from the side of the engine that dissipated when water was sprayed on the accessories.. so I found a bad accessory to I removed the belts.
Sure enough, the alternator bearings are...
Did you get this resolved?
Sometimes a weak spark can cause this condition, you might check your spark by removing a plug and visually inspecting by holding it near a bolt head while cranking. You want a hot spot.. white with blue tinge.
Or maybe your timing belt took a crap too

I think i'm having a timing belt issue as well.
How do I ensure the cam and crank are aligned properly?
Assuming the engine jumped time and I need to time it from scratch, does anyone have a simple procedure??

I'm new and just bought a 97 Corolla with a 1.8L engine to fix up for fun.
It has a particular engine noise and I'm hoping someone here is familiar and can confirm what it is.
It seems to be intermittent and doesn't quite sound like a rod knock but it's definitely coming from about...
