Timing Belt or Timing Chain?

#1
Does a 2001 Corolla LE have the timing belt or timing chain? After doing some searching online looks like a timing chain?? So, does this ever need to be changed? Most cars I've own used a timing belt except for a minivan. Not sure
which is best in the long run.

Timing chains last much, much longer than a timing belt, if not indefinitely. It is unusual for them to fail. Timing belts on the other hand need regular replacement as they do age, crack, wear and break.

The chain itself only gets loose when the tensioner fails. The chain itself is indestructible.

You'd replace the tensioners and the rollers and guides. It is an involved process that involves removing all accessories from the front of the engine. If you haven't done one yourself already, it'll be a lot to do your first time around.

You would also have to re-time the cams.

I agree with Scott. Have a shop look at it before you dump money into the engine. A bad timing chain guide would cause the engine to run rough and miss. If it isn't doing that, the chain isn't the issue.
