What Size Winter Tires?

#1
Im starting to think ahead, as we are only a couple of months or sooner away from snow (Ontario, Canada) With my Corolla S I have 17" rims. Has anyone looked into winter rims and tires yet?
15" or 16" rims with what size tire.
If so, please post your set up, Thanks.

To maintain the accuracy of the speedometer and the proper functioning of your ABS brakes, I recommend staying with the original equipment P215/45R-17 size.

TireRack.com has ten tires to choose from, so you have a wide range of choices -

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=1&autoMake=Toyota&autoYear=2014&autoModel=Corolla&autoModClar=S&width=215%2F&ratio=45&diameter=17&sortCode=49500&skipOver=true&minSpeedRating=S&minLoadRating=S&tab=All

The Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 looks like a phenomenal tire!

Speedometer accuracy and the proper functioning of the ABS brakes will suffer with changing tire sizes, as will the handling of the car.

A set of four winter tires in the correct size is a far better way to go.

Your better off sticking to the size on car maybe go a little skinnier if anything they cut into snow better instead of sitting on top

If you drop to a 16" wheel, make sure the OD of the tire is similar to original equipment.

Scott, these 17" tires aren't cheap. If I lived in a winter climate, I would go 16" steelie in a heartbeat. ABS and speedometer will function fine as long as all 4 tires are the same and the OD is as close to original as possible.

A good set of winter tires aren't expensive, they are priceless. If they prevent just one accident, they've more than paid for themselves. There's a lot to be said for peace of mind too.

Using smaller tires also reduces the safe load carrying capacity of the tires, which is a safety issue. Original equipment sizes are best.

Winter Tires

Where did you get this quote?

I been looking for winter tires for my Corolla S CVT .
The current all season is 215 45R17

Toyota Scarborough quoted me 1042.67 with the wheels all in.

Michelin X-Ice Xi3 is costing 529.20
OTS program: 21.72
Valve Stem Short: 10.00
Whgeel 281.40
Labour: 80.40

What you guys think?

I will be taking the car to the dealership to see if they can use my winter tires from previous car I had. They are fairly new (only used it 1 winter).

Hankook Winter iCept Evo 215 50R17 XL 95V with Wheels.
I am hoping it fits or if anything i may have to get new wheels as I am not sure if it will fit. A mechanic i know mentioned how the wheels should be Hub-Centric Wheel

A P215/50R-17 is a taller tire than a P215/45R-17. Yes, the wrench turners will probably tell you they can slap them on as long as they fit. However, a taller tire will reduce the safe handling of your vehicle, (it will sway more in turns), the speedometer and odometer will now read incorrectly, the safe operation of the ABS braking system can be compromised due to the slower RPM's per mile the tires will be turning and that affects the ABS wheel speed sensors. Also, with the car higher up in the air from the taller tires, more air will be directed underneath the car as opposed to over it and this can increase aerodynamic drag which will also reduce fuel economy.

If we had a size 10 shoe size but found a great deal on a size 12 shoe, would you wear the incorrect size? :)

ABS won't be affected unless the tires are different sizes. With all 4 tires at the same size (regardless of the size difference from OEM), the ABS activates when:

1) One or more tires rotate more slowly than the others (steering input is also looked at to determine if this isn't happening due to turning).

2) All four tires lock up (there is an algorithm to detect total lock by looking at the deceleration values).

TCS will not be affected either.

VSC, on the other hand, will be affected because of inaccurate speeds being reported.

Regardless, I still wouldn't go with the taller tire because as Scott noted, the aerodynamics are affected and the speedometer will be off, and the ability to corner is diminished (which can affect you when the roads are clear of snow).

Get bias ply tires. They are so much better than radials. I recently switched my 1967 tesla model Z to bias ply and my fuel economy went up tenfold.

Okay, seriously though. If all tires are the same size, ABS will still function properly as it looks at a difference in wheel RPMs not vehicle road speed (Just as Donabed said).

Aerodynamics, shmerodynamics. If you want to take a chance at effecting fuel economy, go for it dude!

Great Feedbacks! Thanks everyone. I will end up buying new Winter Tires / Wheels as I intend to keep my new car for as long as I live :)

It is worth every penny for safety on our harsh snow / ice storms in Toronto.

I am selling my Winter tires which I hate to do but someone can make good use of them for many more years.

If anyone based in Toronto interested in these tires feel free to message me.

I have listed in Kijiji Toronto

The price I'm selling is a FREEBIE considering it is SO new .

Winter tires have been installed!205/55R16/XL 94 H
Toyota had recommended smaller tires for Winter but they did have 17' tires but not RIMS. They only have Steelies for 16'.

I purchased my tires and alloy rims at Costco. I am extremely happy with the results. They did an amazing job for something that took them approximately about an hour (By Appointment). Installed Tire Pressure monitoring system on my new set of tires. Looks like it was part of the package :p

Toyota recommended undersized tires? I find that incredible to believe. Who is Toyota in this case?

Scarborough Toyota Dealership located on Eglinton and Pharmacy. I went to another Dealership and provided me with the same set of tire size. I wanted to see if there was a price difference.

Great Article. The reason why my dealership where I bought my car recommended me smaller for winter tires.

Also another similar article:

Your dealership is not Toyota.

Car dealerships are independent of the vehicles they happen to sell.

They are not tire specialists by any stretch of the imagination and it has been my 30+ year experience that car dealerships in general know precious little about tires.

Looks great buddy....I went to my dealer in Kitchener last week and complained about the under body coating they put on my car. To please me, they told me they would give me dealer cost on the winter tires + rims + Covers. I asked what size and they told me 205/55/R16 94H.....Will have them install next week.

I will update how it performs ;)

Your tint and hood deflector look awesome .. I am looking at doing both those things on my black 2015 corolla S ... but waiting for more options to come for the other mods. I want to put vent visors over the windows also ...

Well done .. looks amazing!

Thanks! I love my car and couldn't be any happier. Toyota are just great cars and the 2014 Corolla S is just beautiful! .. as a new owner of a brand new car; I will surely take care of this car. My next new option is installing a Car Starter.. I may just have to wait until the winter passes by for a cheaper rate. I have my own garage which makes it warmer and easier but getting a car starter/alarm is always a nice option to have for when you get out.

There is a lot of chest thumping BS going on here. It is pretty humorous actually. There is some opinions being presented as fact
