To check for the oil burning problem that is typical of the 1998-2002 Corolla's, rev the engine quickly to 3,000 rpm or so, then back and forth from idle to 3,000 rpm, etc. Then check the color of the exhaust coming out of the tailpipe. If you see puffs of blue smoke, that's oil burning.
