That sounds absolutely outrageous!
Go to any independent exhaust shop and they can provide you with a free estimate on the work that actually needs to be done. Don't tell them that you received a quote for $3,000 somewhere else, or they may quote $2,900! Just ask for them to inspect the exhaust system of your car and provide you an estimate.

I'm new around here but just to give some idea of the entire cost of a new exhaust system for a 2002 Corolla S....and maybe help resolve this thread a little.
My local mechanic says about $600 should do it...and that's to err on the up-side. So, 'probly $4-500. Parts of the original system he says are stainless steel so should last a while. Northern Minnesota is harsh on everything and this vehicle still has its original system at 178K. He also says, it's the flex joint that usually goes south on these and that can be removed and spliced rather than installing an entirely new system.
