Distilled water still has salts in it (regardless, definitely safer than tap water). Deionized water is best to use. Grocery chains may carry deionized water, but it has been a while since I have seen it.

Can you get pictures of where you found the oil? It could be the valve cover gasket, and it could also be spill from the person that last changed the oil. Upload them to photobucket and then post the links here. Attachments usually don't work.
